For some reason, though, the company decided to leave audio ads out of Pandora Desktop (at least for now), which means users can start the client and immediately hide it and listen to free music all day. It also provides links for buying music from online retailers. On the main web site, Pandora employs both banner advertising and the occasional audio ad for free accounts. It isn't really a redesign or a "mobile" version, as the company was looking to get this into users' hands while still grappling with the question of advertising. Running on both Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS X 10.4/10.5 via Adobe AIR, Pandora Desktop (beta) is made up of a few choice components lifted from the main site. A royalty cap deal was reached, however, in August that allowed Pandora to keep the lights on, albeit only for US residents. The threat of extremely heavy royalty payments levied against web-based radio stations nearly shut Pandora (and a number of other webcasters) down in 2007. The site supports itself with advertising on the web or by offering subscription plans that remove advertising and enable streaming to other devices for $36 per year. Over the years, Pandora has amassed a broad catalog of popular, independent, and even classical music to stream. Pandora uses all this data to find new music you may like according to the melody, rhythm, orchestration, lyrics, and the other data it collects about the music you rate. After this you can begin building individual "radio stations" by rating music and adding more similar artists. Then, Pandora plays a song from this artists and asks whether you do or don't like the song, or if you're tired of the song and don't want it played for a month. Instead of offering a set of categories and genres to choose from, Pandora first asks you to enter the name of an artist you like. Pandora isn't a typical music streaming service, as it aims to help you discover new music based on the "genes" it analyzes in all the music it can. Offering a Windows and Mac client via Adobe AIR, the Pandora Desktop clients attempts to leap one hurdle while struggling with another: how to provide streaming music to the desktop and still pay the bills. You can find the full list of everything announced at Ubisoft Forward right here. But we’ll have more details as we approach Frontiers of Pandora’s December 7 release date. It will also be possible to bond and name an ikran, giving you an aerial mount for traversing Pandora, and skill trees will improve movement, your ability to ride mounts, and more.Īccording to Ubisoft, the long-awaited adaptation will include single-player and two-player co-op, and is designed to "maximize new-gen consoles."Īvatar: Frontiers of Pandora is considered canon to Avatar: Way of Water, and Ubisoft Massive is working with James Cameron's team to fully realize an interactive version of the western frontier, but the game will star a brand-new character and it’s unclear if we’ll encounter Jake or Neytiri in the game. Players will also need to hunt animals to cook meals that will keep the Na’vi going in their fight against the RDA, and commune with Eywa to gain new abilities and improve their Na’vi skills. Players are able to use a mix of Na’vi weapons like bows and staffs, and RDA weapons like machine guns and rocket launchers. The gameplay is reminiscent of Ubisoft’s other open-world shooter, Far Cry, where players must venture out into Pandora and take down RDA strongholds scattered across the planet.
